The Gallery has
an inviting family atmosphere. It is located in the heart
of downtown Toronto, just east of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
For over twenty
years the gallery has purchased and sold paintings
and calligraphy of famous artists and offered solo and group
exhibitions of works by established and emerging artists.
The gallery carries
a full selection of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy
supplies as well as a large number of Chinese art books.
It provides framing, wet mounting and custom seal design services.
The Karwah Gallery
also offers class instruction at various levels in Chinese
brush painting.
Artist
Mr. Sik-Yee Wong was born in 1941 in the province of Guangdong,
China. He has studied painting since his early childhood years.
As an adult, Mr. Wong studied under the guidance of two famous
Chinese
art masters, Mr. Pak-Yu Leung and Mr. Shao-An Chao. Mr. Wong
then established the Tein-Lai Studio, his own art gallery
in Hong Kong.
His work was well received when he held two personal exhibitions
in
the City Hall Art Gallery of Hong Kong.
Sik-Yee Wong came
to Canada in 1975. Visual Art Ontario selected
his works for province wide exhibition that same year. In
1976 he
opened Karwah Gallery in Toronto. Since then his work has
been
shown in solo exhibitions in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore,
Indonesia, Japan and across Canada.
Mr. Wong has achieved
great success with a finger painting technique that he has
developed, examples of which are displayed in his gallery.
His style of painting is natural and fresh, sparse but well
knit, with bold strokes and beautiful colors, which gives
his work distinctive characteristics.
